What WannaCry is?

This malware is a scary type of Trojan virus called "Ransomware". As the name suggested it holds the infected computer hostage and demands that the victim pay a ransom in order to regain access to the files of his/her computer.

How Ransomware works?

WannaCry Encrypts the file on infected Windows system and spreads by exploiting vulnerabilities.

Is the attack over?

No, WannaCry was first discovered on May 12th and it spread across 150 countries infecting around 57,000 computers around the world. European Countries were hit the hardest and business ground to halt in several large companies and organizations which included banks, hospitals and government agencies as well.

A security researcher named Marcus Hutchins slowed the spread of the WannaCry virus when he registered a domain name hidden within the virus code in an attempt to track the spread of the WannaCry Virus. Unfortunately the spread of the virus wasn't actually stopped, but instead slowed.

How to protect one's computer from WannaCry?

Regardless of which operating system you run, you should install all variable security updates immediately. Specifically the windows users with machines that run Windows XP, Windows 8, or Windows Server 2003 should immediately install the security update
