In the past week it was noticed one such app soar to the top rankings within the app store as the most downloaded app. ‘SARAHAH’ (honesty/candour) – by Saudi Arabia developer ZainAlabdin Tawfiq has become popular with US teenagers and has been gaining popularity with users in other countires such as the UK and Ireland.
Sarahah is application for
Android and iPhone that allow you to receive honest anonymous feedback for
about yourself. The app became popular rather, went viral only for two reasons:
One, because it is very simple
to use. But the big reason why Sarahah app is popular is because it panders to
the narcissist within us.
The key idea behind designing
the app is to allow people send creative messages to each other. But that’s not
what has been happening, instead people are or rather mostly using the
application as a means of cyber bulling and trolling other while keeping their
identity a secret.
The application has raised
concerns among parents and teachers and why:
- Sarahah allows users to send completely anonymous comments to other users, with no way for the recipient to reply or for them to know who sent the message (when it comes to social media and teenagers, is a recipe for cyberbullying.)
- Sarahah users can link their account with their Snapchat account.
- Sarahah website describes the app as “discovering your strengths, weakness and area of improvement”
