Mumbai Local - Squeezing in and out!

Railways are lifeline of India and Mumbai lives and breaths by its local trains. Mumbai's all day and night bubbling buzzing life is quite unimaginable without the local trains in Metropolis. While traveling in Mumbai one should experience the veins of the city - "Mumbai Local Train". They link every nook and corner and are always jam packed with busy mumbaikars.

I have been to Mumbai many times but never got the opportunity to try Mumbai Local. On my recent trip to Mumbai, I ended up experiencing this mode. People from all walks can be seen in the local trains. I opted for second class ladies compartment there were all sorts of working women's, loud fisherwomen, burka-clad ladies and school college girls. Once you get place to sit, the journey becomes more enjoyable

Second class ladies compartment

After travelling in Conditioned compartment till Mumbai Central, I took Ola cab to Sandhurst Road Station to reach Nerul Station. I took a local train second class form the window and waited near the Ladies Coach. I was pretty shocked by the fair of the journey which cost me only Rs. 15 and the taxi costs three or four times than that of local train. It was pretty easy to reach Nerul from Sandhurst Road. I faced no struggle to get in and out of the train.
My ticket to Nerul
Things I observed in local trains was - ladies selling lemons, Jasmine garland, some hairband and all girly stuffs. The interesting thing I noticed was small crabs the fisherwomen was caring.

Oh.. Crabs

The 32 km journey by Local train was covered in less than 1 hour, Far better than by roadways. There were several stations in between few of them I remember was Vashi, Sanpada and then Nerul.

People find seats to sit, I enjoyed standing near the gate enjoying the speed of the train. It is always fun to watch trains being overtaken by the train you are travelling through.

Being kind enough to offer seats is not recommended. People would be willing to stamped on others if possible. Yet, you can be lucky enough not to even stir, the crowd will do all honors of pushing you in and out.

You cannot remain completely untouched, once inside. These Mumbaikar know how to utilize every inch of available space.
